Vesak in Sri Lanka is a sacred Buddhist festival commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of Lord Buddha. Homes and streets are adorned with colorful lanterns and decorations. Devotees visit temples, engage in prayers, and engage in acts of charity, promoting peace, compassion, and spiritual reflection.

Dansal (Alms-giving): Free food and drink stalls are set up by volunteers to feed passersby. Decorations: Homes and public places are decorated with Vesak lanterns (VesakKudu), pandals (elaborate illuminated displays depicting Jataka tales), and Buddhist flags. Religious Observances: People engage in meditation, chanting, and listening to sermons. Many observe the Eight Precepts

Participants: Primarily Buddhists, but the festival is a nationwide cultural event that brings together people of all faiths.

Unique Traditions: Dansal: The practice of offering free food and drink to everyone, regardless of their background, is a unique Sri Lankan tradition. Pandals: Large, temporary structures with intricate artwork and blinking lights that narrate stories from the Buddha's past lives (JatakaTales). Vesak Lanterns: Intricately crafted lanterns made from bamboo and colored paper, symbolizing the light of enlightenment.

Other Notes: Restrictions: The sale of alcohol is prohibited during the two-day public holiday. Global Recognition: The United Nations General Assembly has recognized the Day of Vesak internationally to acknowledge the contribution of Buddhism to humanity. UNESCO has also commemorated the International Day of Vesak.
